In this first portion, the principles behind continuous improvement are reviewed, and the participant is asked to assess the extent to which these best practices are applied in everyday work. Points covered include:
- How an organization that makes good use of continuous improvement tools works (case study.
- What differentiates the continuous improvement approach from traditional or intuitive improvement methods?
- What is the method for continuous, day-to-day improvement?
- What are the ingredients for successful deployment of continuous improvement?
- How does my organization compare with best practices (survey).
- What are the assets and obstacles to the deployment of continuous improvement in my workplace?
In this second part, participants analyze their day-to-day work from different angles, to identify the potential gains that continuous improvement could generate. They then look at concrete solutions to achieve these gains. Topics covered include
- How to differentiate a task that has value from one that doesn't (i.e. one that requires more effort than necessary).
- How to get rid of worthless activities with the various continuous improvement techniques, such as work cells, work standardization, 5S, visual management and SMED.
- When to use each technique and how they improve work.
- How to measure the value of the work we do from the customer's point of view.
- How to measure the value of the work you do in a day.
- Which improvements can be implemented and what is the typical return on investment for each.
Now that the potential for improvement has been identified, and the solutions to address it chosen, this final section looks at :
- How a continuous improvement project is structured.
- The steps involved in implementing a continuous improvement project.
- How to plan a continuous improvement project.
