AI and training: the gap between managers and employees is widening

The artificial intelligence tools we're increasingly accustomed to using on a daily basis, such as ChatGPT or Midjourney, are literally redefining the norms surrounding business competitiveness. Cornerstone's latest report on these tools and the relationship between companies and these new technologies is unequivocal: alarming discrepancies between the speed at which technology is evolving and the continuing gap in employee skills development to support this growth. In other words, training is becoming more than ever a key factor in a company's ability to remain at the forefront of its sector.

According to this study conducted with The Starr Conspiracy in Europe, while 80% of French managers believe they can improve the skills of their teams, only 46% of employees share this view. This discrepancy is even more marked on a global scale, where only 41% of employees believe that their company offers them the tools they need to progress.

The role of AI in competitiveness

The report also highlights the under-utilization of AI in talent management. According to the study's observations of the companies surveyed, 60% are not exploiting AI, and only 38% confirm that they are deriving any real benefit from it. The same is true in Quebec, where a survey of certified human resources and industrial relations consultants conducted by the Ordre des CRHA found that 60% of professionals surveyed are simply not using AI tools in their daily work[3]. Why not? Again, the same answer. They cite a lack of human and financial resources (47%) and insufficient knowledge of the technology (37%).

Another interesting fact is that large companies are the least likely to adopt this technology. According to Cornerstone's Talent Management Index 2023, most organizations are classified at the "Operational" level. At this level, talent management programs are cited as lagging behind in automation, and no solid learning strategies are in place, leaving plenty of room for growth and improvement. By remaining at this level, organizations fail to offer their employees comprehensive growth opportunities to exploit their full potential.

A few key figures

  • 41% of employees don't feel they have the keys to developing their skills
  • 65% of employees are looking for additional training content
  • 62% of employees would like more coaching and mentoring
  • 59% of employees are looking for more professional advice
  • 60% of companies say they are not using AI-related tools

Goodwill, but lack of resources

Organizations' support for employee training and progression also comes under the spotlight. While 88% of managers claim to offer such support, only 59% of employees feel it. What's more, 41% of employees feel they don't have the resources they need to improve their skills.

Despite these challenges, Cornerstone's report notes that talent management is broadly on track, with a global average score of 88 out of 112 points. However, since 2020, the gap between the opinions of employers and employees has remained stable, showing a lack of effort by organizations to address training needs. To reverse this trend, Cornerstone suggests making training more attractive. Among the solutions: establish a clear link between training and career development, promote easy access to training, offer relevant content thanks to AI, and promote collaborative and social learning.

In conclusion

Why not take advantage of the New Year to review your game plan slightly, and ask yourself the following question: How can I integrate the tools at my disposal to increase my team's productivity and competitiveness? Remember that many tools are free and require only a minimum of knowledge, saving you a lot of time and energy! Beyond the challenge of taming artificial intelligence, take the opportunity to invite your teams to talk to you about their skills development needs. It's the perfect opportunity to raise their profile by offering them training that matches their ambitions. Now that's a good business resolution!
